The “mysterious” de@th of Sinead O’Connor should have received mourning, but her memorial statue resembled a scary mannequin, causing people to panic and avoid paying their respects.

Singer Sinead O’Connor’s cause of death has been confirmed a year after the Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker was found dead in her London home aged 56

Sinead O’Connor’s cause of death has been confirmed – just over a year on from her death aged 56.

The Irish singer died on July 26 last year and her cause of death has now been confirmed. The Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker was found “unresponsive” at a home in London on July 26, 2023.

Thousands of mourners attended her funeral in the small coastal town of Bray in north County Wicklow in Ireland last August.

Fans lined the streets and threw flowers at the passing hearse as the singer’s life was celebrated and she was put to rest in a single plot at Deansgrange Cemetery on Dublin’s southside.

The Irish Independent have now reported, citing the Grammy winner’s death certificate, that she died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

The certificate said her death was a result of “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection,” the publication reported. Sinead’s death was registered by her former husband John Reynolds in Lambeth, London earlier in the week.

According to the NHS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke.

When announcing Sinead’s death, a statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” Southwark Coroners Court said in early January: “This is to confirm that Ms O’Connor died of natural causes. The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death. If an inquest is to be opened, the date of the brief public hearing will be provided on our website.”

Just this week, Dublin’s wax museum unveiled a figure of the singer, but faced criticism from her family and members of the public that it looked “nothing like her”. They have since decided to take the figure down as they admitted that it “can do better” and pledged to create a “more accurate representation”.

Her brother John O’Connor said he was shocked when he first saw it online and said that it did not look like her “at all”. He told RTE Radio’s Liveline: “When I saw it online yesterday I was shocked. I thought it looked something between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds. I thought Sinead would have been very fond of looking well, and she certainly did, and if it was supposed to be a representation of her in her early 20s when she did Nothing Compares 2 U, it just looked nothing like her. I thought it was hideous.”

He said if people wanted to honour her memory they should put a statue of her in Dublin, and queried how something like this could be done. “There’s also enough visual stuff out there, in terms of videos and photos, that show what she did look like.” John said it was particularly upsetting to speak about the issue on Friday, which marked the one-year anniversary since the famous Irish musician died at the age of 56. “I lost my sister and to me that’s important. Since she’s not here to defend herself or to speak for herself I just took it upon myself to contact you about it.”

Sinead is survived by three children, Jake, Roisin and Yeshua. Her son Shane passed away in 2022 at the age of 17. In a desperate last social media post, Sinéad paid a heartbreaking tribute to her second youngest son, Shane who died after he left a hospital while on suicide watch. It read: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”

Before her death, the star had been updating fans about her life and revealed she was planning to create music in the lead-up to her passing. Her management team later revealed that she had been putting the finishing touches to a new album, her first studio record in nine years. She was also looking at finalising upcoming tour dates for 2024 and had been exploring “opportunities” around a movie of her book.
