Will Smith’s Zurich Stroll Sparks I Am Legend Flashbacks, Actor Jokes About Solitude and ‘Fred’ in Empty Streets!

Will Smith experienced a sense of déjà vu while exploring the empty streets of Zurich, Switzerland, reminding him of his post-apocalyptic film I Am Legend.

The actor,  55, ventured out in the picturesque city in the morning hours, and recorded a clip for his followers, showing them how empty it was.

‘I am having I Am Legend flashbacks. Looking for Fred. What you doing out here Fred?’ the Oscar winner said, quoting one of his lines from the iconic 2007 film.

In the movie, Smith’s character, Robert Neville, encounters a mannequin he names ‘Fred’, who later mysteriously ends up relocated outside, heightening Neville’s paranoia.

Will — who’s currently working on a sequel to the film — captioned the clip: ‘Sunday 5:30am Zurich, Switzerland. It is Gorgeous! I shall return.’

The clip starts out with Will enjoying his morning stroll, as he tells fans, ‘Little walk though the streets of Zurich. I’ve never been to Zurich before. This is the first time.’

‘Our plane couldn’t take off so we had to stay the night in Zurich. And it’s all mine.’

‘It is so quiet,’ the Ali star says, while panning the camera to show the desolate streets.

Just then a bird chirps, prompting Will to shush him: ‘I was just talking about how quiet it is dog,’ he hilariously adds.

Continuing his stroll along the Limmat River, he shares picturesque views of the serene waterway and its graceful swan inhabitants.

‘I didn’t realize these were all swans,’ he points out.

‘This is a treat for my life. This is a treat,’ he then says as his camera pans to a window display of Swiss Army knives.

‘It’s real. Y’all got it right? It’s Swiss Army knives in Switzerland,’ he jokes.

At the end of the clip the actor expresses his gratitude for the unexpected and rare moment of solitude, exclaiming: ‘This is fantastic. I never get to actually just like walk through a city like this. Good looking out Zurich.’

I Am Legend — set in New York — follows Smith as Neville, a US Army virologist and the sole survivor of a plague caused by a man-made virus, which turned most of humanity into vampire-like nocturnal mutants.

He spends his days searching for a cure while grappling with the loss of his family, loneliness, and trying to stay clear of the infected.

The sci-fi/horror blockbuster, directed by Francis Lawrence, is loosely based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson.

I Am Legend was released in December 2007 and earned $585.4 million at the worldwide box office.

The movie was the third feature-film adaptation of the novel following 1964’s The Last Man On Earth and the 1971 film The Omega Man.

Currently, there is a sequel in development, starring Michael B. Jordan who will work alongside Will.

Last month the 37-year-old actor described the film project as ‘something that is in the works’, as per People.

‘We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,’ Michael said while promoting the Propel Your City Project as part of his partnership with Propel Fitness Water.

‘It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming that one, but I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with him,’ he said of working with Will.

‘Being somebody that I’ve looked up to for a really long time, to be able to work with Will is something I’m really looking forward to. I’m really excited,’ Michael added.

Will previously told Entertainment Tonight in May that he and Michael had spent some time together developing the sequel.

‘I think it’s looking good,’ Will told ET. ‘[We have some] really solid ideas… I think we’re going to make it on screen together. That dude is the truth, so I would love to do that.’

The I Am Legend sequel has reportedly been in the works since early March 2022 with Will reprising his role and Michael joining in a starring role with both producing.

Akiva Goldsman. who co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced the original, is set to write the sequel.

Speaking to Deadline, Hollywood producer Goldsman explained that the highly-anticipated second film will ‘trace back to the original Matheson book’ and return to the New York post-apocalyptic scene a ‘few decades later than the first’.
